Breaking the process down into five steps goes a long way in simplifying the process. There are many reasons for schools, organizations or individuals to apply for government grants and funding. For starters, grants help generate community support for desired initiatives. They also help you find funding for your ideas and projects that provide public services, stimulate the economy and benefit your community in a positive way.

There are many funding sources available, but you need to know where to look and how to apply. Once you understand where and how to get the grants you want, the process is simple.

When it comes to funding for educational or organizational video captions, there are many sources for funding within your local communities, corporations, foundations, and even individual donors. Grants are also available through your various levels of government: local, state, federal and national.

For example, offering closed captioning video to employees may qualify you for the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, the Barrier Removal Tax Credit, and the Disability Access Credit. There are also a growing number of government associations that provide grants and other financial assistance.

While completing a grant application can be challenging, time-consuming, and sometimes complicated, it is entirely possible to conquer the process and become the recipient of some extremely beneficial funding.

Steps To Filling Out A Grant Application

Before you begin, you need to understand the three phases of a grant’s life cycle. It is the advance stage when grants are announced and eligibility is determined. Next is the awarding phase when grant recipients are selected. And finally, there is the post-award phase when grant proposals are put into action and awardees are asked to report on their progress and use of funds.

Once you’ve identified the grants you want to apply for, creating a quality application is key to getting the funds you want. Here are some tips for completing a grant application:

Awarding the grant money can be done, albeit a long and arduous process. But the result is worth the effort, and the satisfaction and sense of achievement from winning a grant will not only fund your project, but motivate your team to move onward and upward. These registrations can take several weeks to finalize, so start this process early! Login.gov, SAM, and Grants.gov registrations must be active for you to submit your application. Complete your registrations well in advance of the application deadline. This should give you time to resolve any issues that may arise.

Both SAM and Grants.gov will require you to use your Login.gov username and password to log in to their sites.

Go to Create an account to set up your Login.gov account. This account will allow you to access many government websites, including SAM and Grants.gov.

Previously, the federal government required a Duns and Bradstreet Universal Numbering System (DUNS) number to register your organization with SAM.

On April 4, 2022, the federal government switched from using the DUNS number to a new Unique Entity Identifier, also known as a “UEI.” The UEI is a 12-character alphanumeric value that will be assigned by SAM for free.

When you register/renew your SAM account, you must select “Yes” when completing the “Representations and Certifications” section. All winners must have these representations and certificates in order to receive a prize. Your SAM registration must be current at the time a grant is awarded and throughout the life of the award.

SAM records, once activated, may take a day or more to appear on Grants.gov. Verify your SAM registration well in advance of the application deadline.
