A sack full of money is a common image in popular culture. They are often found in the hands of cartoon characters guilty of bank robbery, or in the basement of a grumpy rich person, like Disney’s Scrooge McDuck.

In this drawing guide, the money bag is full of gold coins. Did you know that the use of coins as money has a very long history?

The first coins were probably minted or produced by the government in the Mediterranean region more than 2,500 years ago. Coins were easy to hold and more durable than materials such as seashells. Coins were often stamped with images of government leaders, deities, crops, or animals.

At the time, coins were a type of “commodity money” — they were made of precious metals such as gold or silver, and the value of the coin depended on the amount of metal used to make it.

Today, most currencies are “fiat money” rather than commodity money. In many countries, coins are no longer made of precious metals; They have value simply because everyone who uses them agrees to their value.

Have you ever wondered why some coins have bumps on the sides? When coins were still made from pure gold, silver, and copper, some people would shave off bits of these metals from the sides of the coins.

Then they spend the coins for their full value, but either sell the sawdust or use it to make other things. The bumps indicated when the coins were shaved, and thus the thieves could be identified.

1. Start by drawing a curved line, like half of an inverted heart. This starts the moneybag scheme.

2. Draw another curved line that mirrors the first. The lines at the bottom should connect in an overlapping manner. This completes the base of the money bag.

3. Using two curved lines, attach a curved shape to the top of the money bag. This is the rope that holds the money bag shut. Cord fabric with curved lines.

6. Connect the ends of the wavy line using additional wavy lines. This refers to the far side of the bag’s top, giving it a three-dimensional appearance. Draw curved lines running up and down the rope, indicating folds in the fabric.

8. Draw a narrow rectangle through the letter “S”, erasing guide lines as necessary. This forms the shape of a dollar sign, or “$”. Line up the bag using short curved lines and points.

9. Draw the coins that fell out of the bag. Draw a narrow horizontal oval for each coin. Then draw a short line going down each side of the oval. Connect these lines using a curved line, which defines the side of the coin. Weave the side of the coins with short stripes.
