Instead, you will spend 90% of your time doing TWO things in a fashion design job. And if you’re an entry-level designer or assistant? This is especially true.
So what are the TWO things? If you’ve already read the introduction to this book, you might be able to guess. If not, I will tell you right away.
Now don’t take my word for it just because I’ve worked as a designer for over a decade and interviewed 75+ fashion professionals on my podcast who gave the same advice.
Take my word for it because I went the extra mile to do the research to SHOW you. Here’s a bunch of fashion design job listings I found recently on StyleCareers, all requiring Illustrator and tech packages:

And it breaks my heart to see designers like you invest thousands in fashion school when the professors are not qualified to teach you the skills you actually need to get a job.
Not to hate on fashion school (although I’m honestly not the biggest fan), and not to make you feel bad about whatever situation your degree left you in.
That’s because if you’re stuck trying to get a fashion design job after graduation, I want to make sure you know what skills to focus on.
And that’s because if you’re thinking about going to fashion school, I want you to make sure you do your research before you drop some serious cash and take out giant student loans.
How To Create A Fashion Design Portfolio For A Job Interview
I’ll show you what they are, why they’re important, and where you can learn how to create them, absolutely free.
I know that there are millions of videos on YouTube on how to sketch fashion designs by hand.
But the reality is, when you work as a fashion designer, you don’t have the luxury of time to sketch it out. Also? They’re just not that useful. Sure, they look good…but that’s where it ends.
So what are apartments? They are technical representations of what a garment would look like lying flat on a table.

Flats are drawn with accurate construction details such as stitching and zippers. They can even include alternate angles or interior views to show hidden features.
And the purpose of these apartments? Simply put, they are used as a communication tool in two main ways:
And as I mentioned earlier? Unfortunately, fashion school won’t teach you how to use Illustrator or how to draw flats.
I know it’s kind of mindblowing, but I’ve even talked to faculty from some of the industry’s top schools like FIT and Parson’s about this first hand.

I asked them why professors don’t teach students essential skills like Illustrator and technology packages. And their answers were ROTATING.
“As long as there’s a warm body teaching the class, that’s all that matters.” “Professors haven’t worked in the industry in ages and don’t keep up. They have tenure, so they don’t have to be relevant.” “I point my students to YouTube and tell them to find out for themselves.”
I will remind you, my intention with this book or this chapter is not to talk about fashion school. But I just feel it’s only fair to let you know what you’re missing out on with that expensive degree…
And tell you what skills to focus on to get a job as a fashion designer. Because when you go in for an interview? No matter your skill level, you will be placed on the spot with an apartment test:

So if you think interviews are hard? Wait for someone to stand over your shoulder while you fiddle with Adobe Illustrator.
If you want a fashion design job, you need to be able to sketch flats accurately – and efficiently – in Illustrator.
In addition, you will also need to know how to create technology packs. Like a fashion apartment, tech suits are used to communicate a vision to a factory for production. Think of it like a blueprint used to build a house.
Simply put, a technology package is a set of instructions that the factory follows to accurately construct the design. Mostly they are created in Microsoft Excel.
Is Fashion Education Selling A False Dream?
And if you want to get a job as a fashion designer? You need to understand what technology packs are, as well as how to create and use them. Now, in this book, we will do a quick overview of technology packages.
A full tutorial would take way too long. If you want to learn more? I’ll point you to the right (free!) resource in a bit.
A cover is the overview of your garment. It contains high-level details about your design with a finished flat sketch in color.
Technical sketches are flats with callouts to specify design details. They feature every detail from stitching and trims to construction and trim placements. As I told you before, it is mostly created in Adobe Illustrator.

The Bill of Materials, also known as a BOM, is the master list of every physical item needed to create a finished product. This includes everything from materials and labels to packaging materials such as hangers and tissues.
A rated specification is a chart of measurement points (also referred to as POMs) for your product in all sizes. The graded specification is critical to how your garment will fit and is usually created by a technical designer or pattern maker.
The color specifications show which colors the garment comes in. This page of your tech suit makes sure your garment is produced in the right places with the right colors.
In addition to a set of instructions, a technology package is also a master document to track product development. A section for comments is included to tell the factory of any changes, or to let them know that a design has been approved and is ready to go into sampling or production.

Now listen, I know that might seem like a lot. At first, technology packages can feel overwhelming. I promise, they are not as intimidating as they may seem. And they are essential to making sure that designs are done right.
So, if you want a job as a fashion designer, knowing how to create tech packs and fashion flats is mandatory.
