How To Get A Job As An Editor – Anonymous said: Hi September, do you have any suggestions for someone who wants to get into editing but currently has a full time job (in an unrelated field) and can’t give it up to do an internship? Are there other ways to gain experience in hopes of landing a paid editorial job? Thank you!
So, as I’ve said before, the difficult thing about the writing industry is that there’s almost never a set way to do anything – which can be great because it means there’s a lot of ways to get there, but it’s also can be bad because it’s hard to know what will work. Also, keep in mind that since there are so many different paths, another person in the industry may have a completely different opinion than I do, but I am of course speaking from my own perspective and experience.

I’m not sure how involved you are in the writing community, but I’d like to start by being active in the writing community outside of your work hours. You can often find writing groups or events in your area, but you can also join groups online. I understand this is an editing question, but who are you going to be editing for? Other writers. You can also look into attending conferences and conventions.

Like most things in the writing world, a big part of education is that you have to take the initiative to do it yourself. I don’t know where you are in the region, but definitely start studying writing and storytelling (I’m assuming you want to do fiction editing). There are different types of editing, but the two main ones are content editing and line editing. I would suggest working to learn how to do both. There is also proofreading, which is one of the last edits, if not the last edit, during which the editor corrects typos, omitted words, spelling errors, punctuation errors, etc. Learn what makes a good story, how to fix a bad one, and learn all the rules of grammar and punctuation.
To get better at editing, it’s probably best to start reading unpublished fiction (in addition to the published fiction you’ve been reading). For this, it would be great to join a good writing or critique group. You may not be participating by writing, but you are participating by reading and giving feedback. Obviously, the more you do it, the better you’ll get at what works and what doesn’t.
Participating in a writing community is also beneficial because it helps you network. I hate to think about the concept of “networking,” but it’s actually not that difficult in the writing industry. Just start meeting and interacting with people in the writing community and industry. You don’t need to despair, just friends. Networking/friendships can lead to other opportunities and other people telling others about you.
As you begin to learn, grow, gain experience, and get better at critiquing and editing, you might want to ask for some feedback or endorsements from people you’ve worked with, or make a list of solid references.

From there you have two options. You can start looking for editing positions at publishers and try to find them, or you can try freelance editing. You can even try for both. Thank heavens for the Internet because it has revolutionized the freelance world. Build a good freelance website – and you can look at other editors’ sites to see how they’ve done theirs. If this is your first job in the industry, you can start at $10-15 an hour and then work your way up to landing clients. As you get better and better and your business grows, you can increase the amount you charge. Unless you’re a celebrity in the writing world, editors-in-chief hit a ceiling of $60 an hour. I’m sure like any business it takes a lot of work because you have to find clients, sell yourself, etc.
You don’t need an English degree to become an editor, but you do need to have many of the same skills as an English person. You can take the initiative to learn it yourself, or you can consider traveling through an English program at a university and possibly getting a degree. I have a degree in English, and I know other editors who also have degrees.
Finally, I’d like to say thank you to everyone who helped me with my Thunderclap campaign! With your help I was able to reach my goal and I have been visiting my new editing website FawkesEditing.com a lot. If you haven’t shared it yet, I’d appreciate it if you did. Once you’ve decided on the type of editor you want to be, the next step is to improve your skills through editing courses and writing experience. Most editors have a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or other liberal arts subjects such as history or law.
Apart from higher education, there are many short courses in editing, journalism or publishing that you can take. There are unofficial courses you can take to further your knowledge, such as our free course on life in a traditional ‘Big 5’ publishing house, linked below.
