Whether it’s looking for opportunities to trade work for a living, finding a location-independent job that gives you the freedom to travel abroad, working as a digital nomad, or other long-term travel careers—you have a choice.

The reason I’ve been able to travel the world for the past 10 years is because I’ve slowly turned my travel blog into a very successful 6 figure a year business.

First a small disclaimer. If it were easy to get a travel-friendly job, everyone would have one! Many of these professions require passion, specialized training, time commitment and talent. For those who don’t, the payoff isn’t always great.

The truth about becoming an independent nomad is that it takes years of hard work and dedication behind the scenes – something that too many people conveniently overlook.

Having said that, neither work nor travel is impossible. The people I interviewed for the article below took the time to learn how to make these jobs work for them—which means you can do the same if you make it a priority.

Not all “travel” jobs are created equal. The wanderlust opportunities listed here fall into one of the following categories – expat jobs, digital nomad jobs, travel industry careers, or what I call backpacking jobs. What’s the difference you ask?

Means “in exile”. Which means that while you are a citizen of one country, you choose to live/work in a foreign country. Expat jobs only involve travel where you don’t live in your home country. You may be living in a country for months or years (perhaps on a remote work visa) and not completely nomadic.

Working from their computer. This makes them location independent. As long as they have access to the Internet, they can earn a living. Blogging falls into this category, so it also describes my lifestyle. Digital nomads are free to travel at will, working from coffee shops, hotels or co-working spaces. Or they can work from home.

And vagabonds do what I would call “alternative” travel jobs. The type of job that may not require computers or a college degree, but has a more hands-on approach. Think of musicians, artists, or manual laborers. Payment may be under the table.

Finally, I will also include some popular travel industry career options. These are more “traditional” jobs than business travel jobs in the hospitality and tourism industry. Positions such as travel agents, local tourist boards and travel marketing.

Be sure to read my other article that shares various creative ideas to earn extra money from home.

If you want permanent job security, but also want to live in another country, then working abroad full-time is the best option.

Club Med Jobs

Note that not all of these jobs are suitable for everyone. If you have a university degree, you may not be as eager to pick berries on the farm as others. Or maybe you are!

People who travel a lot while making money blogging can look like a dream job. But like many things in life, it’s hardly simple. Making money from a travel blog is hard work – and it can take years.

However, a travel blog is not the only option. Other examples are food bloggers, mom bloggers, fashion bloggers, and lifestyle bloggers. Income mainly comes from advertising, affiliate marketing, product sales and influencer projects. But first, you need to build an audience!

Can you speak english Perfect! English teachers are in high demand around the world – and the pay can be decent. You can get job training abroad, or even take online classes from your computer.

Online jobs (primarily teaching via Skype) require a college degree, and foreign-based jobs also require a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate (these jobs include housing).

Apart from traveling abroad to teach English at a foreign school, there is also a demand for online English teachers who teach children through video chat such as Skype. Over the past few years, a number of online English language teaching services have emerged, mostly in China.

It’s okay if you’ve never worked on a yacht before, because deckhand or steward (it) jobs are entry-level positions that pay really well. All you have to do is take a short course in advance and spend time on a nice yacht while looking for a job.
