Whether it’s looking for work-to-home opportunities, getting a location-independent job that gives you the freedom to travel abroad, working as a digital nomad, or other long-term travel careers, you have options.
The reason I’ve been able to travel the world for the past 10 years is because I’ve slowly turned my travel blog into a very successful business that earns 6 figures a year.
First a small disclaimer. If all travel-friendly jobs were easy to get, everyone would have them! Many of these professions require passion, specialized training, time commitment and talent. For those who don’t, the pay isn’t always great.
The truth about becoming a location-independent nomad is that it takes years of hard work and behind-the-scenes sacrifice—something that too many people conveniently ignore.

This means that it is not impossible to work and travel either. The people I interviewed for this article below have invested their time in learning how to make these jobs work for them—which means you can do the same if you make it a priority.
Not all “travel” jobs are created equal. The wanderlust opportunities listed here fall into one of the following categories – expat jobs, digital nomad jobs, travel careers, or what I call backpacking jobs. What’s the difference, you ask?
Means “expatriate”. This means that when you are a citizen of one country, you choose to live/work in a foreign country. Foreigner jobs are only related to travel because you don’t live in your own country. You can live in a certain country for months or years at a time (perhaps on a remote work visa) and not be completely nomadic.
He works from his computer. This makes them location independent. As long as they have access to the internet, they can earn a living. Blogging falls into this category, so it also describes my lifestyle. Digital nomads can travel freely and work from cafes, hotels or co-working spaces. Or they can work from home.

And vagabonds do what I will call “alternative” travel work. The type of job that may not require a computer or a college degree, but has a more hands-on approach. Think musicians, artists or manual labor. The salary could be under the table.
Finally, I will also list some popular career options in the travel industry. These are more “traditional” careers in hospitality and tourism. Positions such as travel agencies, local tourist boards and travel marketing.

Can you speak English? Perfect! English teachers are in high demand all over the world – and the pay can be decent. You can get a job as a teacher overseas or even teach online from your computer.
A college degree is required for online jobs (basically teaching via Skype) and a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification is also required for overseas jobs (these jobs include accommodation).
Apart from traveling abroad to teach English at a foreign school, there is also a demand for online English teachers to tutor children through video chat such as Skype. Over the past few years, a lot of online English teaching services have emerged, especially in China.
To apply for a position, you generally need a college degree, be a citizen of the United States or Canada, and speak fluent English. TEFL certification also helps. Lessons last about 30 minutes.

Can you imagine sailing around the world working on some rich guy’s private yacht? It’s a great job that requires travel! It’s a fun way to see exotic places. Your food and accommodation are also covered, which is great for saving money.
It’s okay if you’ve never worked on a yacht before, because deck captain or steward jobs are entry-level positions that pay really well. Just take a short course in advance and spend time in a beautiful yachting destination while looking for work.
Becoming a professional travel or adventure photographer selling your images from around the world is a dream job, but it also takes a lot of work. You can bulk upload photos to micro-share sites or sell images directly to clients for use in magazines, books, brand campaigns or websites.
Running guided photography tours or selling photography tutorials online are other ways to make money as a traveling photographer. If you build your social media audience over time, you can also start hiring for paid “influencer” projects.

Of course, you need to know a second language to be a freelance language translator. But if that’s you, there are all kinds of companies that need translations for websites, product manuals, books, and more.
If you’re just starting out, you can even translate restaurant menus, help organize bilingual tours for tourists who speak your language, or translate websites and blog posts. The more fluent you are, the more money you can make.

Backpacker hostels often hire travelers to fill positions on a short-term basis in exchange for free room and board. There are many different types of jobs, from reception to cleaning or bartending.
If you plan to stay long-term, some hostels also offer paid positions. I actually once got paid to work at a backpacker hostel in Hawaii many years ago. It included a small salary and a free apartment to live in.
Another job that allows you to travel the world while making money is as a freelance yoga instructor. You can lead pilates, yoga, zumba, dance classes or provide the services of a personal trainer if you have enough experience.
Some yoga instructors make deals with local gyms, backpacker hostels, or luxury all-inclusive resorts to use their facilities with clients on trips. You can also be hired as an in-house yoga instructor to lead classes for guests. It’s a great career for travelers!
