When I thought about it, two main threads ran through my previous experiences: politics and technology. (This was true even with fundraising work: working in Cambridge, my top donors were CEOs of the city’s well-known tech companies.)
Almost without thinking, I Googled the term “policy and technology jobs” in hopes of getting some relevant results.
Staring at me on page 1 was a job posting for head of digital governance at the Policy Exchange think tank.
To apply, it was noted that you must be able to write well, be confident in public speaking, know how to fundraise and have an in-depth knowledge of the UK political system and technology. Tick, tick, tick.

However, looking back, I now realize how woefully unprepared I was for the role. When I first started as a think tank, I didn’t really understand what think tanks were for. Did they exist to create a media storm? To raise the profile of the issue. Or change the government’s policy? I had no idea how many think tanks there were or how they differed from each other. I didn’t know how to come up with ideas that were plausible but hadn’t already come up with people working in their respective fields. And I had no idea how a report full of policy recommendations could translate into real change in government policy.
After several years, I learned the answers to these questions by working for myself in the world of policy development, asking questions of many talented colleagues, and witnessing how the best in the field operate. With that information I’ve tried to write the guide I wish I could have read when I started.

Sina Watkins, 43, is a single mother of two, with a 19-year-old daughter and a seven-year-old son. Currently unemployed and living with her mother, Watkins says the job will help her get back on her feet.
“It’s all about supporting the family for me,” Watkins said recently at the Job Club in Lenox. “If you’re out there looking for a job, this is for you,” Watkins said.
How To Get A Job With No Experience
The Job Club is a bi-monthly job search workshop at the new Lenox Library and Founding Service Center. Sessions held in the Weisburn Conference Room are free to all community members. The program, powered by Community Career Development, Inc. and Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark’s Office, offers networking opportunities, job leads and interview techniques, as well as a ray of hope. The workshop aims to help those who are underemployed, unemployed or starting a new career by offering resources and employer referrals, as well as job training opportunities.
“The newly trained candidate is the right candidate,” says Tony Jaramillo, director of Community Career Development Programs, Inc., a nonprofit, community-based organization that administers workforce development training for job seekers.
Los Angeles County’s unemployment rate currently hovers at 8.1 percent, above the state average of 7.4 percent; That’s nearly two full points above the national average of 6.2 percent, according to the Department of Employment Development.

“Meaningful work is important because most people are looking to make a living to enhance their quality of life here in Los Angeles,” Jaramillo said. “There is a gap in computer skills needed to secure high-wage jobs. There seems to be a divide between those who have the ability to train and those who rest on their laurels,” Jaramillo said.
Curtis Blue, 47, of Los Angeles, is an information technology professional who has been unemployed for two years. She first visited the job club to improve her interview skills and job search.
Having been out of work for two years, Blue discussed the challenges of keeping up with rapidly changing technology.
“Technology is always changing, so not having experience is difficult. But I learned I’m not the only one struggling,” Blue said.

The supervisor said: “Quality jobs are at the core of developing healthy communities. They improve the economy and help families function. Bringing opportunities and creating a better quality of life for all residents of the second district has been and will continue to be a priority for me.”
The next Job Club is scheduled for September 11th at 11:00 a.m. in the Wiseburn Community Room at the Lennox Library and Constituent Service Center, located at 4343 Lennox Blvd., Lennox, CA 90304.
