If you’re thinking about doing online surveys for money, consider our experience in 2017: Three of us spent a total of over 50 hours doing paid surveys, and our combined earnings didn’t break $90.
How To Make Money Doing Surveys
So, no, online surveys were not an effective way for us to make money. (Skip to the list or continue learning about our experience.)
Surveys Sites To Make Extra Money
To be fair, taking paid surveys was easy and can certainly be done at home if you have an internet connection. The sites we tested were free and required no education or expertise. Depending on the website, surveys can be a simple — albeit slow — way to make a few bucks or a frustrating task that pays nothing.
Some sites paid more than others. We identified sites that disclosed the cash value for each survey and matched us with relevant sites. We are terrified of sites that pay us through a confusing points system and send us surveys that we rarely qualify for.
Note that your demographics and other characteristics largely determine whether you qualify for the survey. The three of us who took the survey in 2017 were single women in our 20s living in urban areas. Depending on the survey, we may or may not be ideal participants. Your profile may lead to different results than ours.
Below are the results of trying to spend an hour a day on each site for five days. On some days, for many sites, there weren’t enough surveys to fill the hour. (We did not count this time in our overall review hours.)
Surveys You Can Take To Make Money
We’ve listed these US sites based on the average hourly rate they earned in 2017, from their highest to lowest.
This site is a collection of surveys with an effective screening process. Its dashboard is informative and displays helpful sections, such as your activity and customer support forms. The site was above average in a selection of surveys we qualified for. As for the points awarded for each survey, 500 or 1,000 points may seem like a lot at first, but when converted into real rewards, you’ll get 50 cents or a dollar. This site is a small survey aggregator, but it stands out. The site has a clean, easy-to-use dashboard and offers a high point value for each survey you complete. The point system is live and shows you on the dashboard how much your points are worth in dollars. But you have to earn 500 points before cashing out. Some survey sites bombard users with information and opportunities—but not opinion outposts. Its simple, intuitive website enabled us to take surveys without a second thought. Initially, we also appreciated the site’s straightforward points system, which works out to 10 cents per point. Most importantly, we actually made some money. We averaged $1.50 an hour on Opinion Outpost and were able to cash it out on Amazon. Check out our Opinion Outpost review for more information.
Make Money Taking Surveys (paid Surveys) And From Home
This site only provides surveys through the market research firm Ipsos that owns it. The site offers fewer surveys than aggregators, but you stay on i-Say for each survey, which simplifies the overall experience. Sometimes it shows surveys you’ve already tried, which is confusing. The site offered 75 survey opportunities, the most of any site we tested. But it also had the lowest success rate, 9.33%, and the lowest average hourly pay rate. In addition, the reasons for survey inefficiencies were often unclear. At one point, we were disqualified for being asked to write the word “purple.” (Yes, we spelled that right.) The site offers many opportunities for surveys, but inefficiencies are common. Sometimes we get disqualified just by clicking on a survey link. Swagbucks aggregates third-party surveys, so some sites it sends you are better than others. Earning points takes a long time, but the site’s extensive rewards marketplace has hundreds of options to choose from, including gift cards, sweepstakes and PayPal payments. Unlike many other sites, Toluna lets users choose their survey topics, such as electronics or travel, which made the task more interesting. However, this perk did not compensate for his low salary. When converting points to cash, we earned just 71 cents per hour — one of the lowest rates of all the sites we tested. Our five hour points weren’t enough to redeem the cheapest gift cards. Ways To Make Money Online As A 13 Year Old From Home In 2022
New customers get a $5 bonus after verifying their email address with InboxDollars. But that’s how little we made per hour during the survey — 41 cents, the lowest rate of the 12 sites we tested. On occasion, instead of sending us surveys, the site directed us to promotions that required our address, phone number and date of birth. Read our InboxDollars review.
No matter the site, the income from doing surveys can be very low compared to other job opportunities. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, for example, and our hourly earnings range from 41 cents to $2.03. Most survey sites also require a minimum number of points before we can redeem them for rewards. At many sites, we did not reach this minimum amount after five hours of work. (You may want to consider other hobbies that make money.)
In addition to our time, we also leave valuable personal data to these survey sites. We often reveal our birth dates, zip codes, income, health conditions, races, living arrangements and more. And after spending hours in question-and-answer mode, we rarely gave much thought to giving those details.
“The biggest risk is how that data will be used,” says Eva Velasquez, president and CEO of the Identity Theft Resource Center. “You’re really putting yourself at the mercy of these sites and saying, ‘OK, I’m going to trust you to be a good custodian of the information I give you.
Beginner’s Guide To Paid Online Surveys
Velasquez says our information could be used for questionable studies or sold to health insurance companies, for example. Or it could be stolen, which is a threat to any website that stores personal data. Most of the information we give away seems innocuous — our shopping habits and travel plans, for example. But information like your date of birth can be used along with other stolen data to identify you. So keep this in mind while you are answering the questions.
Despite the drawbacks of online surveys, some people may still consider taking surveys an attractive option. After all, there are no barriers to entry, and they can be done from anywhere with an Internet connection.
Don’t over share. If you are asked to provide your Social Security number, bank account number or driver’s license number, skip the survey. Velasquez recommends being “intentional” with sharing other private information with survey sites. Answering questions about a TV commercial is probably fine, but giving medical information may not be worth the risk.
Create an email address for survey sites only. Most survey sites send us several emails per day. Signing up for these sites with a separate email address prevents survey offers from cluttering your main inbox.
Make Money Taking Surveys
Install anti-malware software. We recommend this action if one of the survey sites redirects you to a spammy third-party client.
Take breaks. We often experienced long survey sessions, with our faces glued to the computer screen the entire time. To prevent eye strain, the American Optometric Association recommends the 20/20/20 rule: Take a 20-second break every 20 minutes and look at an object 20 feet away.
If you decide that surveys aren’t worth your time, there are other ways to make money online, like blogging, selling stuff, and freelancing. These methods may take more effort, but the payoff is potentially greater.
