There are no stats, no game to equip items, just a list; in addition, mining lists can be created for free, apart from network fees. Loot advertising took off, and the initially free adventure listings began to be resold for big bucks – one was hatched for nearly a million dollars. The project has since inspired an entire ecosystem of projects; for example, the Lootmart developers create an RPG-like interface for Loot “equipment”. The phrase “metaverse” gets thrown around. Now the question is, where is this all going and will there ever be an actual game at the center of the Loot craze? A great example of this tension is Dope Wars, a Loot spinoff that was once teased as a fully functional game. On Wednesday, the Dope Wars account retweeted a call for “game creators and artists” to join the project’s Discord. Dope Wars is based on the idea of Drugwars, a very simple drug-trafficking video game originally for MS-DOS. Drugwars has become something of a cult classic since its release in 1983 and enjoyed a resurgence in the 90s when people played it on calculators. The concept is that players rush around New York to sell cocaine, heroin, weed or speed to pay off a lender. “People are free to build whatever future they want on top of it because it’s an open ecosystem/metaverse,” Torrance added. “People might buy it because they like the artwork or because they’re excited about what the community is building, I’m not sure.” But despite all the talk of cash-strapped gaming going around, not everyone is buying them.
