Then there’s more to think about where to buy toffee candy for the lowest price. You should know how demand is in your area, how much you will charge, and how many weekends you are willing to devote to the craft.
All in all, I’m glad I did, but I’ll be honest – it just wasn’t the job for me. But I don’t want that to discourage you! The purpose of this post is to share all the lessons I’ve learned along the way. I want you to avoid my mistakes and understand if this cake decorating journey is really for you. Because if so, you’re in for a crazy ride!
If you think of cake decorating as a job, you’ll likely get tons of complements in the cakes and cookies you already make. I’m also guessing that you have Pinterest boards full of fun ideas to try and when friends and family have upcoming special events, you use it as an excuse to try new skills.

But here’s what happened: When I started making cakes for profit, it just didn’t feel as fun as it used to. All I felt was tight deadlines and a lot of pressure. Yes.

I can’t help but think about new posts to write and how to improve what I’ve already written. I am totally obsessed with my job.
So first of all, make sure you love love cakes. You must have an unquestionable passion for cream and sugar, even if you’re only thinking of side jobs at the moment. Remember, this will take time from your family or other commitments, so you have to be obsessed with it!

While it’s fun to think of new designs and play with the frosting, dealing with the bureaucracy surrounding any food business isn’t all that fun.
Depending on your state, you may have certain requirements that you must meet. Sometimes a separate oven, sometimes a completely different kitchen! You will likely need an inspection from the health department as well. Look, I told you this was crazy!
Essential if you want to keep your business up and running. It may be tempting to have your first few cakes “under the table”, but if you’re not a legal entity, you’re not protected. You also don’t want to face a lawsuit just because someone got sick after eating your cake.

It’s always a good idea to know what pastry businesses in your area offer and for how much. Do they make crazy cakes? Wedding cakes? Mini cupcakes? Everything? Do some market research and price it to compete with them.
Whatever you do, don’t compete with grocers. Your cakes are worth more than $20. If you lower your pricing, you’ll run out… and fast. You should love what you do, but if you’re barely making more than the materials cost, I promise you won’t love it for long!
Many customers will not understand this way of thinking. Take my advice and let them go to Publix for cake instead. You don’t want to waste time trying to please them. In fact, one of the reasons I quit my job was because I underpaid myself and wasn’t making any money. Still my biggest regret.
