“Before the epidemic, I felt like roller skating was going to take off again,” said Jonathan VanBuren, owner and operator of Hyde Park Roller Magic, which hosts public skating sessions, parties and roller derby.

I noticed a lot of people going to the promenade (over the Hudson) to skate during the quarantine, and even though we were closed, we got a lot of calls to buy skates at the counter.

Popular in the 1950s, then in the 70s and 80s, roller skating is definitely seeing a resurgence.

VanBuren visited a popular skate shop in Manhattan before the outbreak and was seeing a surge in beginners and new skaters. Optimism grew when Hyde Park Roller Magic started receiving more calls about purchasing skates.

“People just wanted to do things,” he said. “When we reopened, it gave me hope because I saw that people were looking for new ways to exercise and do fun things.”

There were a few bumps for Roller Magic: During the outbreak, the roller rink flooded, water mains broke in their parking lot, and the HVAC system broke. But VanBuren rose above the challenges and was able to reopen.

“It’s because of the growing popularity and the loyalty of the people who come here,” VanBuren said. “I couldn’t be more grateful for their support. People who have come out over the years come back and that’s what keeps us going.”

JFAC owner Robert Carter said the 9,000-square-foot rink will truly be a community space where families can gather for parties and gatherings and where organizations can host events and fundraisers.

“The mayor and the city were very instrumental in bringing skating back to Fremont,” Carter said. “We plan to have community events in the space. It’s a community skating rink and a multipurpose room, and I want to try to get different groups and organizations to come here and host their special events.”

The Walk is available for school events, private parties, family gatherings and employee parties. Teams are invited to host ice skating fundraisers at the rink. Team members can invite friends and family to a night of success, and most of the proceeds go to the organization.

The ice rink was unreal. Carter had been dreaming of opening the arena for five years, but lack of funding and pandemic shutdowns kept JFAC from expanding, let alone expanding. JFAC has been closed for 18 months as a result of Covid-19.

The only thing that kept JFAC from closing was Carter’s generosity. With no income coming in, Carter opted to pay for operating expenses with his own personal funds.

Still, Carter is focusing on the generosity shown by the community as he looks to a new era for JFAC.
