How To Teach Business English
A business ESL class can take many forms, and each form allows for a certain level of personalized learning. Let me explain that there are four main types of classes and/or students: pre-experience, practice, company and one-on-one.
Why Teach Business English?
A pre-experience class is one that consists of students who do not yet have experience in business. An on-the-job class is a class of students who are currently working in business, but are from different companies and areas and have different job titles. An in-house ESL class is where you are hired by a specific company to come in and teach English to their employees. Finally, a one-student classroom is where you work with one student.
As you can imagine, these different types of classes allow you to customize the materials and activities in different ways. You won’t be able to be as specific in a large introductory class as in a one-on-one meeting.
After identifying your students and what they need to succeed, you’ll want to start teaching right away! While your business students may enjoy catching up and learning a grammar song every now and then, this activity won’t maximize your time with them. Choosing activities that can teach business skills AND business language will benefit your students in countless ways.
It is important to remember that your students are not only adults, but also educated adults. There are many other types of activities that are suitable for business English lessons. Simply think about the situations your students will find themselves in and turn it into a learning experience. For now, let’s start with presentations, journaling and role-playing.
Having your students present may seem boring, but actually presenting teaches a variety of skills that are applicable to a large number of students, especially business English learners.
Presentations are commonplace in business circles, and it’s important to emulate them in the classroom. Make sure you give your students time to prepare, practice and present the information. Don’t just focus on the presentation, make sure your students prepare and rehearse well. Take some time in class to teach your students how to do these things. In pre-experiential classes in particular, you should spend just as much time teaching them how to prepare as you do teaching them how to present.
Another great part of using presentations in your business English class is that you can focus on topics that reflect what your students will need to do in their work. If you have the ability to adapt – do it! But if you don’t have that opportunity, be sure to give them a variety of topics to choose from or gain experience from.
Steps To Becoming An Online English Teacher
Give your students an opportunity to present things like their progress, a problem they encountered, a solution to a problem, or a proposal of some kind. Have your students propose a project or budget, present their progress in language learning, etc. Emphasize the need for data, facts and an element of persuasion.
After the presentation, students should have time to get feedback on the presentation, their topic, and their use of language. As a teacher, you can decide whether to use the feedback session to continue the business simulation or for an informal review. This is a great opportunity to continue the simulation by having students critique, ask questions, or discuss the presentation as if they were coworkers in the office. However, the ability to summarize the presentation as students is also a valuable task.
At first glance, keeping a journal or diary does not seem like a task that reflects a business scenario. However, there are many cases where an entrepreneur can keep track of their time, expenses or mileage. This basic skill is great for teaching your students and the language they use in them is an important language skill to practice.

How To Teach Business English Online
There are many ways you can introduce journaling or journaling into your business English routine. Keeping a journal of language progress will help students see the benefits of journaling as it relates to work or growth. Basic discipline is great for aspiring individuals to create their own level of accountability.
If you or your students are still unsure, try it for a few weeks. After the trial period is over, discuss the benefits of the experiment. What did they learn? Will they continue? Show them an article from the Harvard Business Review and see what they think. Simply creating a business-related discussion can be extremely beneficial for your students. Not all assignments need to be specifically related to the field of work your students desire or work in.
One of the most reliable language learning activities, role playing can also be beneficial for esteemed business people. I have a confession to make here though: I hate RPGs. They make me uncomfortable, I hate their presence, I’d much rather learn or talk than act or pretend. However, I think the business roles make sense. So, if you’re like me, hear me out!
In the context of business English, role plays allow your students to practice English in a specific scenario, such as a company meeting, an interview, a phone call, etc. If your students are already involved in the business world, you can have them share situations they’ve been in over the past week and then role-play how things could have turned out better.

If you want to make the role play more reality-based, ask your students to bring realities from their studies or business experience. Realia simply refers to objects or artifacts from real life. If you are talking about food, the realities can be cooking supplies or fruit from the market. If you are talking about business, the realities can be brochures, diagrams or outlines from the workplace. If your students are not currently in the business world (prior experience), do some digging of your own to find realia or something to stand in for realia.
Another important aspect of role-playing, especially when “re-creating” a real business experience, is teaching the necessary language. While there are times when you can allow your students to talk about the subject or make do with the language they currently know, to best prepare them to speak English in the workplace, you should provide them with the language they need.
It might be beneficial to role-play a business conversation over the phone without prior instructions, then present the language they might use and have them re-enact the role with the language they have learned. This will allow you as a teacher to find out what language they are missing and what they already know. Find out what works for your students. In fact, ask them what they would prefer!
Nobody wants to waste time. A teacher doesn’t want to waste time teaching something that isn’t applicable, and students don’t want their time to be spent sitting in a classroom that doesn’t help. Make sure you choose the right activities to allow your students to learn all they can.
