How To Write A Comforting Letter – Editor’s note: This article was originally published on February 7, 2017 and was updated for World Refugee Day on June 20, 2017.
A Southern California mother receives hundreds of letters to sort at a warehouse that assembles supplies for backpacks for child refugees. A message of hope and love — some in drawn crayon, others in beautiful script — is written for a homeless child half a world away.
How To Write A Comforting Letter
Volunteers tuck the letters into child-sized backpacks destined for refugee camps in Europe and the Middle East, packaged and shipped by Operation Refugee Child. The backpacks contain essentials for families fleeing war and terror, such as diapers, warm socks, blankets and protein bars. But each package includes something extra — a small coloring book with crayons, or stickers, or a baby rattle — to relive a childhood of childhood for children who are forced to grow up too fast.
How And Why To Write Letters In 2021 — Maple + Main
Operation Refugee Child is a labor of love for Gader Ibrahim, a 32-year-old mother of two and former bakery owner born and raised in California, who until recently lived the life of a pretty standard Orange County mom, by her own description. She was worried about schools and her kids and things in general. Then she saw a heartbreaking photo of Aylan Kurdi, who drowned in the Mediterranean Sea as his family made the perilous journey to flee Syria. U.N. According to him, he was one of the 8,793 refugees who died crossing in 2015 and 2016; So far this year, 1,990 people have died or gone missing.
“I was a crying mess. I looked at my husband, I had to do something. He said, ‘Go to Greece.'” So Ibrahim joined a volunteer group of women who brought baby carriers to refugees. Greeting refugees on a boat in Greece, Ibrahim saw a need — and that an ordinary American mother like her could make a difference.

Inspired, she came home and started packing backpacks. A year and a half later, Operation Refugee Child now has official 501(c)3 tax-exempt charity status. They sent more than 6,500 backpacks to refugees in Greece and Jordan — and each backpack contained a letter.
Letters Of Recommendation Guide
“Please take comfort in knowing other families are thinking of you and praying for your safety,” says a simple note.
“I hope you find a good place to live. I hope you like the goodies we sent in your package. My favorite is the Hello Kitty word search. I chose it myself,” reads another letter, carefully written in elementary school pencil letters and signed “Kylie.”
Some people include family photos. Some draw pictures of their dogs. When she goes to the refugee camps to deliver aid, Ibrahim sees letters hanging on the walls of the tents. She saw firsthand how refugee children and their parents valued letters (even though some of them could not read English).
“Letters mean a lot. They think, ‘Oh people care about us. We are not forgotten,” said Ibrahim. “It’s so sweet, I love it.”

The letters paint a very different picture from the recent heated rhetoric and political debate surrounding refugees and migrants. People of all political persuasions send letters and donations and join Ibrahim for regular volunteer sorting and packing days at the warehouse.
In fact, Ibrahim recalled a recent argument on Facebook with an old high school friend about a campaign to boycott Starbucks after the company pledged to hire 10,000 refugees. Ibrahim supports Starbucks; Her friend, a Trump voter, supported the boycott. They argued, but a few days later when Ibrahim posted an urgent request for donations to help refugees, her Trump-supporting friend donated money and volunteered her time.
Writing letters, sending donations and packing bags and boxes for refugees is definitely a family affair at Operation Refugee Child. Ibrahim has two sons 4 and 1; The 4-year-old recently learned to write his name and loves signing his drawings and letters for child refugees. Although she knows she can’t solve all the world’s problems, Ibrahim says the best feeling is getting young kids involved and volunteering. Echoing a sentiment made famous by Mahatma Gandhi, she said: “I want them to be the change they want to see in the world.”
One of the more unusual letters to arrive at Operation Refugee Child’s warehouse came from a woman who wrote about how, as a child during World War II, she received care packages “from people who also cared about the children of their enemies.” She never forgot their kindness.
