In my previous role, I was responsible for providing students with accurate information about the application process, loan counseling and their eligibility for federal/state financial aid, other funding, contracts and/or institutional payment plans.*The Financial Aid Appeal is not just for incoming freshmen. ; Students of all grades can appeal their financial aid packages at any time during their college years.*

Understanding Financial Aid Award Letters

But what may surprise many students and families is that colleges are more likely to say “yes” to your request for additional aid. And that’s exactly what a financial aid application is – an application for help.

Note to Parents: While you can—and should, if possible—help your child through this process, please DO NOT write them a letter—colleges will not look favorably on this!

So as long as your request makes sense, colleges or universities will likely consider your request for additional aid!

Go to the financial aid section of your school’s website, or simply Google “(School Name) Scholarships and Grants” to find the page. Each school has a different set of scholarships and grants, programs and awards, and policies. Some scholarships/grants are available to all students, while others have specific and restrictive conditions. Appeals procedures also vary from school to school. Check to see if there are specific forms you need to fill out before contacting the school. It is your responsibility to learn about the various options and requirements, so do your part before asking for help! And remember, there are merit-based and need-based scholarships.

3. Provide all necessary information (such as your current award status and any forms you have completed) and describe your financial situation/circumstances.

After reviewing your appeal letter, the financial aid office may use the “technical discretion” provided by Higher Education Act Section 479(a)[“HEA”] and decide to award you additional financial aid. You may need to provide proof of your financial standing before a decision is made,  so have these documents ready.

Reaching the Financial Aid Office is only half the job; students must also reach the Admissions Office. The Office of Admissions, as the name suggests, is concerned with accepting students who they believe will improve their institution (like you!). They will want to help you as much as possible.

1. Ask them if there are ways for you to get more help, or if they can increase the amount of your current help.

How To Accept, Decline, Or Decrease Your Financial Aid Award In Lionpath

According to college aid experts, the typical increase in eligible aid is between $1,000 and $5,000. Admissions officers may not be very knowledgeable about financial aid procedures, but they can give you information about additional courses or grants you may be eligible for. Also, be sure to ask if the assistance is renewable. You don’t want to think you’re going to get the amount of help each year, when in fact it’s a one-time award. This is very important, as tuition will increase from year to year while the amount of aid will stay the same or decrease.

Colleges are no different when it comes to “price matching.” Do you have a better offer from another college? Mention the amount a competing college is offering you (or simply show that it’s more than what your target school is offering), and make it clear that you’d like to attend the school. target school if you are offered extra help. An additional tip (which I used in my appeal letter to Fordham University for which I received an additional $7,000) is to let the college know that if you do not receive additional aid, you will have to choose another college. t remember the words I used in my letter of appeal, but it was something like this: “I would like to go to Fordham University, but without more help, I will have to choose X University, where I am taught. $Y gave him a scholarship.” And it worked! I received an additional $7,000 in scholarships over all four years, which saved me $28,000!

Even if you’re committed to college, you shouldn’t say so! Making a deposit before you receive a response to your financial appeal will only decrease your chance of receiving additional aid because the college will automatically assume you will attend the college whether or not it offers you additional aid. Instead, let the college know, WITHOUT making a deposit, that your decision to enroll will depend on whether or not you receive additional aid.

Don’t expect to hear back the day after you email the Financial Aid and Admissions Offices; give them a solid week or two to respond. If you are pressed for time, send a follow-up email or call the offices to ask for more help. Be sure to use Email Etiquette Tip #7 when you follow up.

Once they’ve responded, it’s your turn to take action again. Provide any documents they require and follow all their instructions diligently. Be sure to thank them for their help, and go get that money! A Financial Aid Counselor is often hired by a college or university to support students with the payment plan for their post-secondary education. He not only helps students to get loans, private scholarships are allowed but also helps them to reduce their expenses and reduce their debts.
