Really and truly, I would never normally start doing anything Christmas-y until after the Thanksgiving break. We do have three whole weeks to enjoy Christmas when we get back, so I love all that fun in those fifteen days 🙂 BUT, our local paper publishes Santa letters for K-2 students for our entire district. This year, the deadline to submit them is November 21st! Normally they give us at least a date in December, but not this year!!! The deadline is way too early, but it doesn’t matter because I don’t want my class to be left out. So, today we sat down and got to work! By the end of the day I had 40 Santa letters ready to go (because I enjoy this lovely two class process!!)

The first thing we did today was start our rough designs. I never mark writing like that. Santa letters are the ONE and ONLY time I use a red pen. I know it seems mean and horrible but I have to type all the letters when they are complete so I really need minimal errors to do them fast!!! Before we write, we discuss the fact that we should not just start begging for gifts. I always tell my students to butter Santa before they spit out their wish list 🙂 We usually use this as our format… 1. Nice, opening sentence 2. Ask a friendly question 3. Say what you would like for Christmas 4. Ask another question 5. Best wishes, closing statement
I have letters of all lengths and sizes when the day is over. Some students write 3-4 pages, while some only write half a page, and I’m totally fine with that!
All my students this year (and most years) celebrate Christmas, so I hardly have to worry about kids who can’t write letters like this. I do have a few who don’t do Santa at their house, so they address their letters to their moms and dads, or whoever does the shopping 🙂 We just keep it on the down-low and don’t spoil it for anyone else 🙂 I have even had some students address their letters to God, which is absolutely precious in my book!
The Santa templates are in my Christmas Craze unit. I’ve been doing this same letter format for several years and it still seems to work! Now we can focus on Thanksgiving again… phew! One thing at a time 🙂

Experience a day of Rooted in Reading with these lesson plans and activities for reading comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar! We’re enjoying our RACK week this week and I’m taking the opportunity to throw in some Friendly Letter writing exercises, always a good thing!
Our anchor chart was simple but covered the necessary parts. Most of my students were familiar with the structure, but I’m glad I made this for review and especially to help my students with some sentence starters.
We then generated a list of school helpers who we thought would like a special delivery of RACK Letters at the end of the week. They came with:

We made a separate table with all their names, to help with spelling, and we started by choosing one and generating some descriptive words and phrases that told why we were so grateful for their help at our school.
They used the Anchor Chart template in their own Writer’s Notebook to write a quick thank you note.
After they got an okay from me and some quick editing help, it was off to publish. I printed our RACK Lettertwo to a page so that I could save copies and have the empty illustrative page right next to their letter. To learn more about how to do that, click HERE.
Letters are coming in now and they are so lovely! They have the parts of the letter down pat and they are able to develop their sentences much more, which is such a pleasure to read. I know that when we deliver these at the end of the week, the recipients will be so touched by the simple but sweet messages from the children.

Letter writing was one piece of writing that most of my students enjoyed. Here are some ideas for teaching the parts of a friendly letter, along with ten meaningful ways to easily incorporate letter writing into your curriculum!
When my son was learning to write letters, he just couldn’t remember what the different parts of a letter were called. He could remember one or two, but he could not identify them all, nor give them in the correct order.
One day I decided to make motions for each of the parts of a friendly letter and it clicked! After going through the motions a few times, the names stuck and he hasn’t forgotten them since! He even sometimes goes through the motions when writing a letter to help him remember the order in which he has to write.
Learning the motions helps students learn the different parts of a friendly letter, but what exactly do those parts look like? Write a friendly letter together with your students on card paper. Label each part.

Big news this week…my daughter Ella lost her 2nd tooth! Here is the sweet letter she wrote to the tooth fairy.
Speaking of letters… this week I introduced parts of a letter to my students and created an anchor chart for students to refer to for the next few weeks.
In honor of Veteran’s Day, we wrote letters to United States troops…I hope the sweet letters my students wrote will be delivered in time for Thanksgiving!
Next week we will continue writing letters within our opinion writer. My students will learn persuasive letter writing. They will write to our principal to give their opinion and reasons for something they want to change in our school. I can’t wait to see what they come up with…. I hope it has something to do with chocolate for their favorite teachers!

We will also be writing to our pet dog Scruffy…he has so many problems for my smart students to solve! Last year my students just loved picking a problem card and coming up with solutions. My heart smiles when they show such empathy in sharing their solutions with their classmates (Every day I have the students who wrote to Scruffy during their writing center read his or her story to their classmates).
