How To Write A Letter To Your Love – In one of my previous blog posts titled Nostalgia I wrote about keeping boxes of memories—the collection of things we don’t want to forget—and what exactly we put in those boxes. I have admitted to throwing away many old letters, especially love letters that I received when letter writing was still in vogue and electronics didn’t even exist. He laments the longhand form of letter writing to me. I miss the feel of the pen running across the page, the ink sticking to the attractive stationery that reflects the feeling in the hand as the letter comes to life. I can’t remember the last time I wrote a love letter with emotion and it makes me want to read John Keats’s love letter to Google. (Wait. I’ve done that. Shall we pause for some inspiration? If you need it like I do, go here: The Love Letters of John Keats).
Very good. Let’s move on. Let’s pledge to write a love letter in today’s language to someone we care deeply about. Why?
How To Write A Letter To Your Love
Because we are about to do something noble. We are going to do something meaningful and significant. We are going to risk it all and put ourselves out there emotionally and save a dying art form.
How To Write A Love Letter (with Pictures)
(Let’s just say: As we are all consciously doing our part to recycle and save the planet, let’s immediately do our part for this worthy cause).
Now, raise your hand in some sort of pledge formation (reminiscent of a Brownie, Girl Scout, or Boy Scout pledge; or it could be that you’re taking some sort of oath. I’m sure any hand-in-the-air-looking -meaningful gestures will work fine). Now, here’s the part where you have to talk to yourself out loud (so, if necessary, to be secretive with all this love letter writing/difficult stuff, close the office door, go outside where no one can see you , or mumble. With your back softly to noble people who wonder about your every move).
“Today I will write an important letter to my loved one, in my own handwriting, using my own thoughts and feelings.”
Step 1: A pen (not your iPad, computer, or Blackberry), but a writing utensil that has a nice color of ink, and while you’re at it, check in an old drawer to see if you have any stationery. Attractive. If you’re at a loss, cute stationery is available anywhere from Target paper stores to Hallmark stores. If you decide to make this a routine, you’ll want to invest in some great materials. Honestly, it shouldn’t count as much as it does, but the actual presentation of the letter will probably score you some points. Its appearance and elegance really matter. It shows you put some thought into it.
A Letter To A Friend
Step 2: Who will be the recipient of this letter? (For those of you participating in this activity, this should be abundantly clear. However, if you’re not sure who to address the letter to, I’m sure Johnny Depp or Cameron Diaz would work well for this practice round. will).
Step 3: Think about the overall theme of the letter. Will it be an announcement? Love, respect, or reinforcement of that person’s sense of caring? Your letter should have some theme. Perhaps its nature is that you are grateful for that person’s role in your life. It may also address a kindness your loved one has bestowed upon you recently. Or, it could be acknowledging that your recipient means the world to you. Whatever the theme is, write accordingly.
Step 4: Start composing your thoughts and address them specifically on paper. It should be from the heart and come from within. Allow yourself to feel the words flowing out of you as you write them. If necessary, write a first draft before you put it into final form—or, be bold and allow the first draft to be “the one.”
Step 5: Your letter should be like a good book – it should have a beginning (the salutation), a middle (the body of it) and an end (the memorable conclusion). Again, let the prose come from the heart, and while Keats’s writing is poetic and elegant, this love letter should feel just like you. Remember, this is meant to be preserved, and which your loved one will want to remember and perhaps even store in his memory box.
How To End A Letter
Step 6: Review it. Does it say everything you wanted to say? Are you satisfied with his tone and language? Does it look beautiful? Is it a good presentation and is it properly addressed? Does it reflect your feelings and the nature of your relationship?
Step 7: Present it. Mail it. deliver it. Let someone else deliver it. Include it with the gift. The way you decide to get the letter into your loved one’s hands will be part of the overall impression on him or her.
Step 8: Pat yourself on the back. You created a handwritten love letter and saved a dying art. And you probably made someone very happy in the process. You may not have saved the planet in this endeavor (trust me, the trees will be glad that love survives on paper), but you have reacquainted yourself with the lost art of handwritten personal prose to the one you love.
Writing a love letter is one of the most romantic things you can do. And I am sure it will be one of the most appreciated gifts you give. Getting the feelings you feel into a love letter to him can be brutal. But a love letter for boyfriend is a perfect way to express all your feelings and show how much you really care. Whether you miss it, it’s a special occasion or just because, find the perfect words to express your undying love.
