How To Write An Old Time Letter

How To Write An Old Time Letter – Have you ever tried writing a love letter? It’s an awkward endeavor, to say the least, and so easy to come off as corny, too serious, or even scary. Love letters have a reputation for being old-fashioned, a relic from long ago when lovers were kept apart by great distances, political strife and curses (sound familiar?), and had to make their words last. We hear all the time about love letters from great artists or historical figures, and while the language may seem old-fashioned now, the sentiments remain eternal. The lesson remains the same: we are all strangers when we are in love.

Writing a love letter isn’t always easy, but when done right, it can benefit both the writer and the recipient. Writing down what we like about each other – from common interests to your partner’s hypnotically shiny hair – reminds us how special the people we care about are. We take many of our relationships for granted because they are comfortable, to the point where it is sometimes difficult to remember why we love each other. In this pandemic year where we all need a mood boost and something to keep ourselves busy, the lost art of the love letter is an art worth resurrecting. See how!

Before writing a friendly letter, add the date to the top left corner of the paper so your friend can save the letter and remember it. Start the letter by writing “Dear [their name]” and then mention things you are both mutually interested in, such as current events or politics, as you would if you were speaking out loud. If you think of something you want to add after signing the letter, you can always add a postscript, or PS, with a final insight or joke! For ideas on more topics to talk about in your letter, read on below! Even in a world of constant, never-ending notifications, there’s no ping as exciting as getting good, old-fashioned emails. I love the satisfying tearing of the envelope, the imperfections of the ink writing, the emojis of the past. Unfortunately, I never remember writing to my friends, so I can’t blame them for keeping digital communication.

This month is National Letter Writing Month, though, and Address Me Dallas is giving people the easiest way to put pen to paper in their mailbox. The organization is hosting a letter writing party at Wild Detectives on Sunday, Address Me: Everything Needed to Send a Piece of You.

There will be a wide variety of stationery and postcard options, stamps, pens and typewriters. Artists and calligraphers from Kaligrafos will be there to address envelopes, and the Dallas Pen Club will provide fountain pen tutorials.

Who, you ask, wants to receive a letter from you? I would be happy to receive a letter from literally anyone, so feel free to send it to D Magazine. More appropriately, try reaching out to your grandparents, out-of-town friends, your extended family, or that pen pal you lost touch with 20 years ago (maybe they’re still sad?). If you don’t want to talk to any of these people, you can create a secret note of encouragement with Spread Joy 24-7, an organization that leaves notes of affirmation for strangers who need them.

The event will also include an exhibition of old letters, many of which are of local importance, curated by the Dallas Public Library. Address Me Dallas host Amy Walton sent me the amazing specimen below, which I feel compelled to share.

If you’re a history buff, you’ll appreciate this cheeky 1939 invitation to a pre-game dance party hosted by the Dervish Club at The Adolphus. Turns out people have always liked to light up.

Be original. You’re not exactly like anyone else. Your letter should be a representative of yourself, not anyone else. The world is full of imitators in literature, who pass on, leaving no reputation behind. Occasionally originals emerge, and fame and fortune are ready to serve them. Illustrious writers past and present have strayed from the beaten path. Letter writing provides an excellent opportunity for displaying originality. In your letter be yourself; write as you would speak.
